“The LORD said (to Elijah), ‘Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the LORD, for the LORD is about to pass by.’ Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper.” 1 Kings 19:11–12
As believers, we are given many opportunities to hear God’s gentle whisper. Some of these
might be one of the following. See yourself in some of these scenarios, and worship.
There’s a little slithering wisp of wind along the sand as you sit on the beach on a Friday
evening after a hectic week. It came and it’s gone. From where? God’s gentle whisper – “I’ve
got you. Cast all your cares on Me, for I care for you. Let this wisp of wind carry them away. Relax in My presence. Relish this moment. Rest in My strength.” Psalm 55:22 1 Peter 5:7
A little stirring in the leaves – look before it’s gone. God is here; He whispers today – “I love
you. See this beautiful world I’ve created for you. Hear it. Feel it. See it. Enjoy this moment. And remember, I am with you always.” Col.1:16 Psalm 65:5–13
Walk along this tiny meandering stream in the park near your home. Stop and listen. Just a tiny ripple. Just a little gurgle. In this pleasant almost-silence, hear God whispering, “I am the God of all comfort.” And be comforted. Walk on in confidence and wonder. Psalm 23:4 2 Cor. 1:3–6
Then you hear a gentle rustling in the leaves – perhaps there’s a bird hiding in there – it seems that God is stirring something in you, something to remember, something to ponder, something to expect coming your way. “See, I am doing a new thing.…” What might His whisper be saying? Isaiah 43:19
Here we are on the beach again, but with a different scenario. Hear the lapping of the waves,
no crashing tumult, just a gentle rolling motion, creating a repetitive pattern in the sand, so
intriguing and restful. And God reminds you, “My Son washed all your sins away. Rejoice in His finished work. Praise Him.” John 19:30 1 Peter 2:24 Romans 8:1
As you play some background music while you go about your daily chores, hear Him say, “Let
me soothe your cares away. Cast all your cares on me. I am your burden bearer, your source of peace. I’ll wash over you with My Spirit as the music plays.” Rejoice, and go on about your
work with a renewed vigour. Psalm 68:19
Then there’s a lull in the music – Take a moment to remember that He sings over you.
“The LORD your God is with you, the Mighty Warrior who saves. He will take great delight in you; in his love he will no longer rebuke you, but will rejoice over you with singing” (Zeph.3:17).
What a wonderful picture! Take delight in this verse and sing praises to Him.
You hear the gentle “coo” of a baby – God whispers, “You are my child.” Your mind
responds, “I am a child of God. Hallelujah!” You feel His gentle touch. He’ll wipe away all
your tears. You are wrapped securely in His arms. He has given you new life; you are a
new creation. He whispers, “May your life reflect this in wonder and gratitude.” Rev. 21:4
1 John 3:1 Deut. 33:27 2 Cor. 5:17
When your repentant child whispers, “Mommy, I’m sorry,” do you hear His whisper, “My
Child, do you have something to confess? I’m so merciful and forgiving.” Dan. 9:9 Ps. 103:8
Micah 7:18–19
When your spouse whispers a “sweet nothing” in your ear, your heart is stirred. And God
stirs your heart with every whisper of His, reminding of His promises, His presence, His love.
Joshua 23:14 Numbers 23:19
In your quiet time as you sit with your Bible on your lap or on the table beside you, listen for
His gentle voice, “Open it. Its rich abundance will tell you who I am, what promises I have made for you, about my Son, Jesus Christ, your Saviour, about our mercy, grace, and love. The Holy Spirit is with you, in you, and will guide you into understanding. Let Him lead you now into praise and prayer. I’ll bless you.” Col. 1:19–20
Be aware. Be alert. Be expectant. Listen carefully for His loving, gentle whisper. Rejoice.
