2 Thessalonians 1:11-12 says “So we keep on praying for you, asking our God to enable you to live a life worthy of his call. May he give you the power to accomplish all the good things your faith prompts you to do. 12 Then the name of our Lord Jesus will be honoured along with him. This is all made possible because of the grace of our God and our Lord Jesus Christ.”
How often do you have children in your home that are not yours? They may be friends of your
children or children in your neighbourhood who just drop by off and on. They may seem like an extra person to deal with, especially on days that you are busy or you just don’t want an extra child to take care of.
I want to tell you a true story, but for the privacy of the people involved, I am changing the names and places.
Alexander and Victoria had a daughter named Martha. Sometimes Martha had a friend come over, whose name was Charles. There were many times when Charles was just a kid, that Alexander and Victoria didn’t need. But they knew Charles’ home situation wasn’t the best, so they loved Charles and treated him like their son. They taught him the same morals they taught their daughter. When they bought a treat for their daughter, Charles also received a treat as well. This went on for some years. Then Charles’s Mom went to another town so they didn’t see Charles very often. Years later they were reconnected with Charles. Charles now is a grown young man.
It was easy to see the influence that Alexander and Victoria had had on Charles’s life. He had done well in school, he had solid work plans for the future, and he was a well-spoken young man, kind and showed much love to Alexander and Victoria. If you were to ask Alexander and Victoria they would say “We didn’t do anything.” But because of their love and care, Charles had learned how to be a strong, loving young man.
God has given us everything we need through the Holy Spirit, to fulfil what God puts in our path to do. It certainly may not be what we thought He wanted us to do. However, no matter how small it seems we do not know what an eternal difference we can make.
